Financial Assistance Programs for BPW/VA Members/LOs
Louise Whitman Foreign Study Fellowship
In 1959 the Foreign Study Fellowship was the first fund established by BPW/VA. In 1984 the fund was moved to the Virginia BPW Foundation&#x2120 and in 1997 it was renamed in memory of Louise Whitman, past president and past executive director of BPW/VA, teacher, worldwide traveler, lifelong learner, student of foreign cultures and the first recipient of the fellowship. This fund provides the opportunity for a businesswoman to travel to a foreign country to study the business conditions there, with particular reference to the status of women. Each applicant for the fellowship must:

Eleven fellowships have been awarded since the fund was established, one in the 60s, two in the 70s, three in the 80s, four in the 90s, and one since 2000. Recipients have come from nine local organizations and they have traveled to Australia, England, Philippines, Japan, Israel, New Zealand, Australia, Norway, Egypt, Western Samoa and Thailand. One award was not used because of the political conditions in the country at that time.
In order to perhaps increase interest in this fellowship and in recognition of the increased cost of traveling, the Trustees of the Virginia BPW Foundation&#x2120 agreed at their pre-convention in May 2001 to increase the amount of the fellowship to $3,000.
